The BCA requires that all emergency exit signs to have a brightness that meets the minimum requirements of 30 mcd / m² after 90 minutes.
If installed in a complying manner, there is no legal exposure just like any other product.
Photoluminescent pigments that absorb UV light energy from surrounding light sources and store this like a charge which is then released as light in the form of a glow. So when the power is cut and standard lighting turns off, a Photoluminescent exit sign continues to glow afterwards and fulfils the role of an emergency exit sign.

100 Lux on the face of the signs from a minimum 4,000K cool white light (standard commercial lighting). In the majority of cases the general lighting will be sufficient to provide the required 100 lux. However, in the small percentage of areas which may not achieve 100 lux, a low cost LED light can be installed, utilising the same power source as the existing EXIT light.
Established in 2015, the Photoluminescent Lighting Council (PLC) is the peak industry organisation for the emergency visibility industry in Australia, New Zealand and the Asia/Pacific region and has an associate relationship with the Photoluminescent Safety Association in USA. The aim of the PLC is to further the understanding and use of photoluminescent products and solutions.
In early 2018, the PLC board of directors approved Photoluminescent Council Standards – PLCS 101 Parts A, B and C relating to Photoluminescent Exit Signs.
